Sharing the Royal Ontario Museum fossil casts with local secondary schools

Our 2014 show titled, Marvellous Mud, featured a display of Burgess Shale fossil casts on loan to our club from the Royal Ontario Museum. The loan was for six months and after our show ended our club decided to make the most of the opportunity. As a result, we hosted two special evenings at Riverside Secondary School in Port Coquitlam and Port Moody Secondary School in Port Moody.

The evenings featured a display of the Burgess Shale fossil casts in addition to a collection of fossils from other well known sites from British Columbia, Wyoming, and China. Students were able to study some of these fossils up close using magnifying glasses and microscopes. Retired geology teacher Eria Williams hosted a slideshow and presentation on the Burgess Shale in an adjoining room.

We wish to thank earth sciences teachers Teena Della from Riverside Secondary School and Aliisa Sarte from Port Moody Secondary School for their support in hosting these events at their schools. Our report to the Royal Ontario Museum is available for viewing.
